Loan Equipment for Students

Loan laptops are no longer available. LRAT continues to hire out other equipment:

Loan equipment should be collected from and returned to LRAT's main stores underneath the Great Hall on the Edgbaston Campus. Access is from the rear of the Aston Webb bullding - see our contact us page for directions.

Sound Recorders

Recording directly into WMA format files which can then be loaded onto any computer simply through a USB connection. The Olympus VN5500PC can store over 200hrs of voice recordings. Ideal for recording interviews.

The loan period on the sound recorders is one week, and may be borrowed at any time of the year.

Digital Still Cameras

We now lend out the 10 megapixel Fuji J110W. featuring a 28mm wide angle lens and 5X optical zoom.The  mage resolution is 2736 x 3648 and images are stored in JPEG2 format ready for transfer to a computer by USB. Image storage is internal storage (up to 24 images only). Much greater storage can be achieved using SD cards up to 8GB are easily obtainable, from computer retailers or stationery shops such as Ryman in University Centre. The loan period on the still cameras is one week, and may be borrowed at any time of the year.

Eligibility

Normally registered students of the University of Birmingham, who can satisfy a few basic conditions:

  • are not in the status 'Financial Hold' with the University
  • have not lost or damaged any LRAT equipment previously

Reserving a Still Camera or Sound Recorder

Laptops, Still Cameras or Sound Recorders cannot be booked or reserved.

Loan Period

The loan period on the still cameras and sound recorders  is one week, and may be borrowed at any time of the year.

What to remember when picking up equipment.

To borrow equipment the student must provide LRAT with a valid Student ID card

Still cameras and sound recorders are issued on a first come first served basis.

You will need to be prepared to sign an agreement taking full personal responsibility for theft, loss or damage.

Booking-out procedure

You will check the contents of the equipment package with LRAT staff and then sign agreements as to the loan and the use of the equipment.

Looking after the equipment and Security

You will be responsible for the security of all or part of the equipment during the loan. Any loss or damage will be invoiced to you. This applies also in case of theft - the borrower should make insurance provision for this. We will invoice for all loss or damage, and non-payers will be put on 'financial hold' which could lead to your not being awarded a degree.
